Review Tuesday: Parasyte: The Grey - Season One (2024)

Parasyte: The Grey
Season One
(2024)
Forces are assembled to combat a parasyte that takes over human bodies and also has a taste for human flesh.
I hadn't heard of this thing. It's a Netflix series from Korea that's based on a manga. My friend wanted to give it a shot, so why not? I like horror and manga, should be fun, right?
The series starts off with a man being taken over by some hideous parasite. It entered through his ear. After that it went on a violence spree. After that it is explained that these parasytes popped up at certain locations around the world and each country has been mobilizing teams to neutralize the threats. The trouble is, the parasytes can hop to another body if they aren't disposed of properly. And they are VERY strong. There is a considerable cast of characters, but this mostly focuses on a young and pretty store clerk. Sorry, I had terrible difficulty learning any of the names...
The basic concept: the parasites are trying to survive, but it's hard to remain undetected when they insist upon eating other humans. If they just invaded and kept a low profile, that would be one thing, but they are in a city and collect humans for food to the point that it is impossible NOT to notice. Then there is the Grey Team, a paramilitary force assembled to battle these things. Their leader is this cute chick who seems completely unstable. She's like a comic-book parody of trigger-happy law enforcement. Imagine a substantially less logical Judge Dredd.
The special effects are okay. The characters are very cartoonish and one-dimensional. There's a lot of stuff going on that defies logic. I would call it okay at best. The pretty women in it helps a lot. Season one ran six episodes. Netflix did NOT pick it up for a second.

tranche \trahnch, trahnsh\, noun:
- any part, division, or installment: We've hired the first tranche of researchers.
- Finance. a. one part or division of a larger unit, as of an asset pool or investment: The loan will be repaid in three tranches. b. a group of securities that share a certain characteristic and form part of a larger offering: The second tranche of the bond issue has a five-year maturity.
verb:
- Finance. to divide into parts: tranched debt; A credit portfolio can be tranched into a variety of components that are then further subdivided.
Tranche unsurprisingly shares a root with trench. Both words come from the Old French trenchier meaning "to cut." While this term first entered English in the sixteenth century, it was 450 years before tranche took on its financial senses.
