Turtle Thursday: Bask

Turtles, like all reptiles, are cold-blooded. They get body heat through their environment, namely, by basking in the sun. In my tank the closest thing I have to the sun is a floodlight and a full spectrum light. Between the two, the pets get the same benefit as if they were out in the sun. Pictured above you'll see Dante using Snappy as his chaise lounge for a glorious afternoon bask. Quite the life!
Pic by Mrs. Bax0jayz, taken on an Olympus FE-210, I think.
A text joke from my cell
It was once said that a black man would be president "when pigs fly." 100 days into Obama's presidency...... Swine flu.

Esmee Denters In The Studio With Justin Timberlake
A mere two years ago, Esmée Denters was just a pancake house waitress with a webcam and a dream. An aspiring singer who fell in love with her father's Stevie Wonder albums as a child, Esmée was 17 when she began posting videos of herself on YouTube singing her favorite hits by Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, P!ink, and Natasha Bedingfield."I had seen all these videos of amateur singers, which gave me the idea," she says. "I was just interested in what other people thought of my voice." Within nine months, Esmée's videos had racked up 21 million views, and she became the number one most-subscribed musician in the history of the popular video-sharing website.
Esmée's clips soon caught the attention of Justin Timberlake - one of her musical idols - who was drawn to her silky, soulful voice, natural charisma and songwriting talent. He then signed her to his label Tenman Records, an imprint of Interscope, and began executive producing and co-producing the majority of her debut album. They lined up an impressive list of noted songwriters and producers to collaborate on the project including Polow Da Don (Usher, Ciara), Stargate (Rihanna, Ne-Yo), OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder (Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield), and Toby Gad (Beyoncé, Fergie). The result is an edgy, soulful pop-R&B set that Esmée says truly reflects who she is as a person.
Relatability was something that was important to Esmée on her debut outing, which is why she was thrilled for the opportunity to co-write the majority of the songs. Her first single, "Outta Here," sends a message of female empowerment through a hybrid of urban beats, pop lyrics and rock attitude. Sneak a peek into the studio to learn more about the Dutch beauty when she recorded the track with Justin Timberlake and Polow Da Don.

Introducing Chrissy Coughlin
Chrissy's seasoned voice coupled with her warm personality are an unstoppable combination. She calls to mind Sheryl Crow and Natalie Merchant with tinges of Rickie Lee Jones and Lucinda Williams.
And 2008 has been a good year for this New York City based singer-songwriter. The winter was full of excitement moving to and 'officially' becoming a 'New Yorker', the spring delight of releasing her new CD, Look Ahead, and the summer and fall have been chock full of performances to support her new release.
Comparison: Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant, Lucinda Williams
Influence: Sheryl Crow, Rickie Lee Jones, Natalie Merchant, Lucinda Williams

bumptious \BUMP-shuhs\, adjective:
- Crudely, presumptuously, or loudly self-assertive.
autotune
- Pitch correction software specifically for vocals that makes up for a lack of natural singing talent. 90% or more of all "professional" recordings use this software. An extreme example is that horrific Cher song from a few years back, and the Kid Rock song where is voice is all fucked up. Used in moderation it can hardly be heard except by a trained ear.
or
Man, that chick sings so bad not even autotune can fix it.

In Print: Terminator Salvation: From the Ashes: The Official Prequel Novelization by Timothy Zahn
This is a great year for sci-fi geeks especially if you are a fan of The Terminator. The Sarah Connor Chronicles got better, unfortunately in time for cancellation, but it was getting good. The new movie taking place in the future starring Christian Bale as John Connor, Terminator Salvation, comes out soon and it looks amazing! And this official prequel novelization for the movie, From the Ashes, by Timothy Zahn came out recently.
I usually get into ANYTHING with no expectations. With nothing expected you're less likely to be let down. However, having read several of Zahn's books in the past, I had a bad feeling about where this book might go. He tends to over-develop unnecessary / peripheral characters and develop known characters in ways that seem incorrect. He kept up those trends in this book.
This book is about a single attack on Skynet in LA by John Connor's band of resistance fighters. Even so, the book is mostly from the point of view of a former US Marine named Justo Orozco who helps protect some of the survivors in that city. Then Zahn goes on to describe the strange association between a 16-year-old Kyle Reese (John's father) and some mute 10 year-old girl named Star who accompanies Kyle everywhere. They also speak to eachother in some unspoken code that only they know.
True to form for a Zahn novel you have about 2/3 to 3/4 of the book dedicated to character development then the book rushes into it's happy ending. True to form, that's how this book. A major face-off took place between humans against machines. That was where Zahn threw me off. It seemed like a fairly bleak ending. it IS the terminator, humans get killed in masses. Somehow there are a bunch of survivors, John Connor gets kudos for his handling of the mission, and Kyle and Star are left running for their lives. It was a completely unsatisfying ending.
This book didn't really lend any new understanding of the story of the characters. You don't to bother reading this to follow what will happen in the forthcoming film. In fact, I recommend that you pass on this.
If you choose to, you can buy it now on Amazon.

Mutiny on the Bounty
Spotlight: Mutiny on the Bounty: On this date in 1789, most of the crew of the British ship Bounty — led by Fletcher Christian — mutinied, setting the ship's captain William Bligh and 18 loyal sailors adrift in an open launch in the South Pacific. It took 47 days for the boat to travel the 3,618 nautical miles (6,710 km) to Timor in the Dutch East Indies; the crew had no navigational instruments other than a sextant and a pocket watch. Bligh and his crew returned to Britain in March 1790, and reported the mutiny. Three of the mutineers were later tried, convicted and hanged. Bligh went to trial for losing his ship, and was acquitted.
Quote: "So you'll face me with a court of inquiry, eh, in England. Well, Mr. Christian, we're a long way from England and what can happen on this ship before we get there may surprise even you." — Captain Bligh to Fletcher Christian in the 1935 film, Mutiny on the Bounty

KaiserCartel - Oh No!
KaiserCartel's earthy blend of folk and rock will make you laugh, cry, sing along, and want to hold hands with the stranger next to you. Warm up by the fire with KaiserCartel.
"We've been compared to Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris," says Benjamin. "I think we're more like Lucy and Ricky," adds Courtney. The dynamic duo of Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel, KaiserCartel, formed when the two Brooklyn based musicians joined forces to tour the country in the summer of 2004. Crammed into their Toyota Prius named Gertie filled with instruments, thrift store finds, and their furry friends "The Crayons", KaiserCartel has been touring regionally and nationally ever since.
Courtney started her career at age 2 singing "I am a lonely little petunia in an onion patch" in Indianapolis, Indiana and has continued music throughout the rest of her life. She has studied opera, Indian classical music, and the folk music of South Africa. Courtney gets her inspiration from having no biological roots and her psychic ability to predict her breakups. Courtney has played with United States Three, The Prom, John Mellencamp, Sean Lennon and has recorded with The Wallflowers.
Benjamin started his career by transcribing Black Sabbath"s "Iron man" So that he could play it on the saxophone in the sixth grade. From there, he switched to the drums and played at his high school talent night in the only band that got thrown off the stage due to the amount of uncontrollable slam dancing! Benjamin gets his inspiration from crowded subway stations, local watering holes, and New York Femme Fatales. He has played with The Heartdrops, Zombie Squad, and Benjamin Cartel.
KaiserCartel have a genuine, homespun, sound that is all their own. "Eclectic, infectious, music," are the words Benjamin uses to describe their lo-fi, song-driven style. "We want people to feel like a fly on the wall in our living room," says Courtney. Whether you come in the middle of the set or come right from the start, by the end of listening to their music, you will be crying, laughing, and will have that warm feeling you get from spending time with close friends.
KaiserCartel's earthy blend of folk and rock will make you laugh, cry, sing along, and want to hold hands with the stranger next to you. Warm up by the fire with KaiserCartel.

People love movies about crazy brawds, so here's your proof again. The new flick with the delicious Ali Larter (pictured) playing a woman obsessed with Beyonce's husband, hence the title, pulled in $28.5 million. 17 Again was a distant second. I have a feeling that with the summer blockbusters coming out starting this Friday, the numbers are going to go crazy.
