This may be book two of the Underworld storyline, but it's really a prequel that establishes events that lead to both of the stories of the movie.
The book, by Greg Cox, opens up in "current" Statue Park, Budapest, Hungary. Actually it's supposed to take place a couple months before the movie. In Statue Park the lycans have an arms deal going down. The end product of that deal ultimately will lead to the new weapons they are armed with in the movie. That entire story is relatively few pages. The vast majority of the tome is about the forbidden love between vampire and lycan, Sonja and Lucian and the beginning of the war.
The ancient tale of what brought Lucian and Sonja together is a sweet tale of love. As well, the story of Sonja's fall from grace when it's discovered that she's been soiled by a lycan is very sad. But for the most part I'd have to say that the writing was somewhat predictable and bordered on simplistic. One example would be the ways that Lucian was way too much the puppet of his undead masters.
All that aside, it's a good story and fills in many gaps and questions you may have had after seeing the movie or reading the first book. Whether or not it's accurate to Danny McBride's storyline in the long run, we'll have to wait and see. I'm starting the new book already...
