The Void

(2016) 

Cultists attempt to bring an undescribable horror into the world. 

One night my BFF suggested seeing THE VOID. This movie is well documented as classic cosmic horror, so I was more than willing to give it a shot. 

 

A cop, Daniel Carter (Aaron Poole), discovered a man near death and rushed him to a small local hospital for treatment. What that cop didn't know was that two men were hunting him down for unknown reasons and his companion is killed in a grotesque manner. 

 

This movie is a WILD ride. It's exactly what you would expect from genuine Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror. Weird stuff just continues to happen, but there's a reason for it all. And it all builds to... something terrible. 

 

Really, this is quite a well made horror film in the tradition of HP Lovecraft. Cultists. Reanimating the dead. Vile creatures. People losing their minds. Gateways to other dimensions. It's all in there, and it is all well-written and makes sense. This is a movie I have meant to see for quite a while and I am happy that I finally did!

A deep-water expedition discovers something horrific. 

My friend and I were watching something else on AMAZON, I can't remember what, and this came up right afterwards. It looked pretty good and it gets good marks from the Lovecraft fans so we came back to it.

 

For a fan of HPL, this movie starts off in an exciting way. There are tons of callbacks and references to the works of Lovecraft. The movie starts off really well. The story makes sense. A group of scientists discovers what looks like a giant gate at the deepest depths of the ocean that man was able to explore. A team is assembled and they go to investigate. Once they get there, a Lovecraftian horror commences! 

 

The movie started off pretty well. It went well until Cthulhu shows up. The special effects were basic at best. That was fine. But after that scene, the movie kinda loses focus and drags. It went from fun to dull within the span of minutes. It became very disappointing very quickly. 

 

Yeah, disappointing is a good way to put it.

goat rope

• A situation or activity that has become completely fucked up, or, an exercise in futility. The phrase comes from the image of a goat, tied down with a rope, humping the rope but not getting anywhere. Similar to goat fuck.

These directions are useless - trying to find this place is such a goat rope.

2020

Catastrophe strikes an underwater drilling facility in a Lovecraftian way. 

I have been meaning to watch this movie for years because it's pretty popular in the Lovecraft circles. My BFF said she wanted to watch it because Kristen Stewart is nekkid in it. Okay! Sounds good to me!

 

After some catastrophic failure at an underwater drilling facility, survivors try to figure out a way to survive. That's pretty much the entire thing. Approximately one and a half hours of that. It gets right to it and it doesn't let up until the end.

 

It's fun, a lot of suspense, and there IS that Cthulhu edge to it. I'd say it's worth watching.
