A couple weeks ago my in-laws informed my wife that they had rented a cabin in Greenpoint, Long Island for a week and that we were cordially invited to spend the the final days of the trip with them. I knew this was a bad idea and immediately attempted to dissuade my wife from going.
"It's only one weekend," she insisted, "what's the worse that can happen?"
I could only venture that I had a bad feeling about this little journey and that I think we'd be better off staying home. Needless to stay, these pleas were far from irrefutable proof, and ignored.
Last Friday night was my club meeting so I had to rush home afterward, pick up the wife and shove off for the North Fork of Long Island. This was a good chance to see what my new GPS could do.
Eighty five miles. The GPS estimated about a two hour drive. I did it in less than one and a half. We got there, and I saw a complex of cruddy shacks. The Star Cabins they called them, but they really looked like nothing heavenly. We walked in to a putrid waft. It smelled like low tide in the cabin. The lighting was poor. Everything was painted yellow, under the poor lighting looked extra dingy. I stepped into the bedroom. No air conditioning. TV, no cable, and no remote. The bathroom door didn't close. You can't throw any sort of paper refuse into the toilet. In other words, this place was a hole!I took a shower to try to relax a little. Afterward I met my wife in the bedroom and asked, "Why don't we hop back in the car and head home."
"We're already here," she stated, " I know, this place makes me want to throw up too, but just get some sleep and we'll spend the day on the beach. We don't have to spend any time in this place at all."
That we did. We spent HOURS on the beach, a beach that was shockingly beautiful for New York! That night we had a huge BBQ with some cousins, tons of food was cooked. Finally we went home Sunday morning, taking only minutes over an hour to go from door to door thanks to the GPS.
Moral of the story? Sometimes you really DO need to trust your gut instincts!
