Oh, what hath Ridley Scott wrought? This was a movie with such potential, but it seemed like someone forgot to use any budget. How can you mess up a fantasy movie with people in the cast like Tom Cruise, Tim Curry, and Mia Sara? Plus, Scott is the guy behind such greats in sci-fi as Alien and Bladerenner. It's like he rushed this one out and didn't invest time nor money on it.
Personally, I have a soft spot in my heart for this movie. I remember seeing it on TV and being taken by the most evil villain since Darth Vader, The Lord of Darkness, played by the awesome Tim Curry.
I would say the movie needed a lot more magic from the special effects crew to
smooth over the rough edges. It had great potential, like a diamond in the rough, just needed a little extra TLC to make it good. As the way the final cut ended up, it was visually weak at best.

It was fun to return to this movie from my teens, but it wasn't what I remembered it to be. In fact, I remember the movie having a song at the end by Tangerine Dream and Jon Anderson (from Yes) called Loved by the Sun, but wasn't on the edition of the DVD I have, unless I missed something. Tom isn't a blowhard in this. Mia Sara is cute, and this was pre-Ferris Bueller, but she looks more mature in this. Tim Curry is amazing at anything he does.
Well, here's more on IMDB:
