Artist Interview: Conny Valentina, Day 3

It's Wednesday, so the means we're on day three of my interview with the versatile artist Conny Valentina. We've already learned she's an artist from Australia who might be best known for her pin-up artwork of lovely ladies in dark settings. She also feels that women have yet to get their due in the art community. Let's see what we learn today.

Who were your influences?
  • Michael Whelan and Rodney Matthews really did most of it because I saw through them, that it was all about colour. They used fearless colours to evoke emotions out of the viewer, and I knew I wanted to try and tap into that as it affected me greatly.

How would you describe your own personal working methods?
  • Dyslexic.

What would you consider an ideal situation for getting into a creative mindset and producing a piece?
  • Finding five minutes where I am not being interrupted tends to do the trick. And a good track playing in the background doesn't hurt.

What are some of your plans for your work in the near future? Any shows or sales on the horizon?
  • I tend to work either on covers or private commissions. I don't bother with exhibitions here as there aren't that many gallery owners here that like this style I work on. I am working on a book currently that I hope one of these days to finish.

What do love most about creating art?
  • It's cheaper than therapy.

What would you consider the most difficult part about being an artist?
  • Being broke.

What's your favorite medium to work with and why?
  • I love acrylics the most. The colours are so vivid and expressive. But I am also trying my hand at water colour at the moment, and while I still suck at it, I hope to one day suck less.
The interview will continue tomorrow, but in the meantime you can connect with Conny Valentina on the web:
