Can you give my readers a brief introduction to the band, for those who are unfamiliar with you. How did you form?
I basically just started creating electronica based songs at home for fun in my spare time. People seemed to be really digging the tracks though so I decided to take things a little more seriously and that lead to the birth of Vivid Point. When did you first start writing music?
When I was about 12 but I didn’t get right into it until I joined my first band when I was 16. It was mostly co-writing but we all loved working together and had a lot of fun.
How did you choose your genre?
Well I like a bunch so I just did eenie meenie miny moe and picked some out. Seriously though I’ve always loved the idea of mixing electronic, rock and pop elements together so that was the clincher really.
Who were your influences?
There actually wasn’t really any bands or artists who inspired me directly. As I said before, I’ve got a pretty broad taste in music, from rock to pop to hip hop and so on, so I think they’ve all influenced me to varying degrees.
Did you ever take any formal music lessons?
Yeah, I’ve had piano, guitar, bass, drum and singing lessons over the years. I was never really a massive fan of learning theory as a kid but it obviously helps!
Did your environment while growing up have an impact on the kind of music you make today?
I think at the least it helped get me to this point. I built a band room in our spare room and used to jam in there a lot. I also started messing around with electronic music later on too so I’d say it played a role for sure.
Which of your works would you say is your favorite, so far?
My debut single "Over Again” is a sentimental favourite because it was the first ever Vivid Point song. But I’m also loving the tracks I’ve been recording for my debut album with Sonny Truelove and some other new ones I’m working on at home too.
How do you feel about the impact of the internet on the music business?
It seems to have its upsides and downsides. Its opened up a lot more doors for artists to market and distribute their music. At the same time though, if records aren’t selling then it makes it harder for artists and labels to survive.
Do you think major record labels are necessary any more?
From an artists point of view, I think it depends on your goals.
I mean if you were an artist and you wanted to be a superstar, I think you need that sort of machine behind you to help make it happen. You can make a lot of noise independently but the majors pretty much have the money and resources to do it on a mass worldwide scale like Coke can.
How do you normally write your songs?
I usually start off with piano or synth and then I’ll flesh out the song with bass, drums, etc once I’ve got something decent down. I just keep working on them until I think I have a good verse, chorus, etc.
In your opinion, what does a good song need to consist of?
Personally, I think you’d want to make sure every part is the best you can make it. Good intro, verse, chorus, bridge or whatever the structure is. Lyrically, I think it helps to have something people can relate too as well.
What song is most exciting to play live? Original and/or cover, please!
“Over Again”. It’s a bit of a fist pumping anthem so it’s good for getting the crowd going.
What cities have been your favorite to play?
Sydney, Australia. It’s home!
What do you think the best part of touring is?
Seeing the world, meeting new people and getting to play shows. Just reading that sentence, can you believe it can actually be a job? Pretty sweet right!
What cities have had the best reception for your music outside of your home state?
New York and LA. Hopefully a few more jump on board in time!
Where do you see the band in 5 years? 10 years?
If all goes to plan, I’ll have a few albums out and be touring as many places as possible!
Any words of wisdom for those with hopes of breaking into music?
Make good songs, have a good live show, learn how to self promote and release your music and work hard to achieve your goals.
What was the strangest thing to have happen while performing on stage?
Probably seeing one of my school teachers semi dancing/moshing at a show! Picture a stereotypical accountant getting their boogie on. Strange but funny at the same time.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
I got asked this the other day and actually don’t have one because I don’t really feel guilty about anything I like. But for the sake of it, I’ll make one up and say my obsession with the Spice Girls. 15 years on and I still wanna be their lover! Wow, that was lame. Sorry!
If you could have a conversation with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
My Pa. He was a great guy and I miss him. I’d love to sit down, have a beer and watch one more game of footy with him if I could.
What has surprised you most in your career so far?
Probably just the fact that people are getting into the music and that I’m already doing stuff like this interview, getting radio airplay, etc. Some of it’s pretty hard to believe!
Any hobbies outside of music? Sports, etc?
Mainly swimming at the moment. It’s summer here and I’m a bit of a water rat!
What do you watch on tv?
I usually only watch TV when I go to bed these days. So I might watch Letterman, Entourage or pretty much anything that isn’t an infomercial.
What movies do you like?
A good comedy and action/drama movies that are a bit original and make you think.
Read any good books lately?
Yeah, I’m reading Keith Richards autobiography called Life at the moment. Loving it so far!
Where do you live?
Sydney, Australia, mate!
