Review Tuesday: CHILD'S PLAY [2019]

CHILD'S PLAY
A doll named Chucky goes on a murderous rampage.
There are two themes that I don't like in movies, in general:
  1. Heroes who are children
  2. Evil dolls
So as a result the CHILD'S PLAY franchise was never high on my list of things to see. However, Mrs. Bax0jayz happens to be a huge fan of the series, so we went to see it last weekend.

This time around the story starts in a manufacturing plant in Vietnam. A disgruntled employee deprograms all of the safeties on a "Buddi" doll, puts it on the truck to ship out then kills himself. In this new film "Buddi" is made by some juggernaut company, much like Amazon or Walmart, that equips everything one uses in everyday life."Buddi" happens to be something like a hub that can control all your other devices from the same company, much like Alexa. But Buddi, in addition to being a digital assistant is a friend for the family and a toy / companion for your children.

After a customer returns a Buddi that's acting strangely to Zed-Mart, MILF Karen (Audrey Plaza) brings it home for her son. It happens to be the Buddi that had been reprogrammed without the safeties He assumes the name CHUCKY. Then his faulty AI begins to LEARN. He learns to cuss and commit violence. And from there starts the downward spiral of gore and violence. The doll is smaller than the original, but no less creepy.

The cast was pretty good. Choosing Mark Hamil to be the voice of Chucky was pure genius. The main character, Andy (Gabriel Bateman) was very good and I almost didn't loath this child-hero. Aubrey Plaza seemed almost too young and hot to be Andy's mom, but hey, it was nice looking at her.And the rest of the cast, really quite a bunch did a great job.

The special effects were excellent. The gore was brutal. The horror was all there. Maybe the only cliche part was the final lunge scene. But I suppose they HAVE to do that, right?

All in all, much better than I expected, and enjoyable.
