SOLO
A STAR WARS Story
Expanded Edition
by Mur Lafferty
The origin story of, Han Solo, our favorite smuggler from STAR WARS!
Han Solo was always one of the more colorful characters in Star Wars. He was a smuggler, a space pirate, spice runner, expert marksman, and a scruffy looking nerf-herder. There were multiple allusions to his checkered past amongst the various movies, but there wasn't a whole lot actually known of his origins. After Disney took over the STAR WARS franchise, Han was given an origin story film that was supposed to start a trilogy. Unfortunately, the movie faced horrible backlash due to the fan-rage aimed at THE LAST JEDI. At any rate, the movie was considered a bust and the plans for a trilogy were nixed.
I happened to enjoy the movie and looked forward to reading the novelization in hopes of additional details and bits for the story.
My hopes were realized! In this expanded edition of the novelization of the film SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY the author, Mur Lafferty, provides far more details than any movie possibly could, while answering a bunch of other questions and making some connections.
Lafferty did an amazing job with this book. She didn't just transcribe what you saw on screen into words. She told the story from different points of view to give the reader the clearest picture of what was going on, down to thought process of the various individuals. I thought this approach was clever and charming and helped tell the story in an even better way possible. It's like having a narrator telling you some behind the scenes thoughts that makes everything more meaningful.
The book also clarified one thing that bugged me and made my ponder it even more.
Towards the beginning, after the failure of their mission with Tobias Beckett at the hands of Enfys Nest, we see our scoundrels just scurry off and crash land. They WALK to meet Drayden Vos. The WALK to meet Lando. All this was within a short distance of the original heist, yet there were no Imperials swarming about trying to find the ones responsible for the theft of a enough coaxium to fuel a fleet of Star Destroyers. This bothered me in the movie because I wondered how they were able to evade the Empire so easily; but the book lays in details that makes you even even more confused how they were able to get away so easily. This, to me, was the biggest ploy hole in the story, but it was not the fault of the author. She had to work with what she was handed.
The book was great! Well worth your investment of time and money to acquire and read!
