Review Tuesday: Firefly (complete series) & Serenity

Firefly
(complete series) &
Serenity
Joss Whedon's cult classic about the adventures of the Serenity and her crew.
After the huge success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the networks were throwing all sorts of development deals at Joss Whedon. In 2002 - 2003 when FIREFLY originally ran, I wasn't able to catch any episodes. I just wasn't motivated to watch a sci-fi series about space cowboys. When I recently mentioned to my friend that I had never gotten around to seeing the series, she wanted to remedy that situation quick.

The Serenity is a Firefly class spaceship and her crew are a ragtag group thrown together by circumstances and trying to make a living and survive in this wild west universe. Yes, wild west. In the future humans terraform planets across the galaxy. The main planets looked really sci-fi, while the boonies were like the wild west, LITERALLY.

Whedon was building towards something and had a multi-season story arc in mind. Alas, it would never be. After ONE SEASON the show was cancelled, much to the chagrin of fans (referred to as "browncoats"). In the short run of a fourteen episode season, the show developed a huge fanbase. The writing was that good that people fell in love with the show and the character development almost immediately. After more than 20 years when I finally got to watch it I saw what all the hype was about. I get it. And that's why the fans were thrilled when a one-off movie was being made to finish out the intended story arc. The movie was SERENITY. Whedon figured out a way to tie up the loose ends and bring everything to a conclusion within a two hour movie.

In conclusion, I am very happy that I finally got around to watching this all in its proper order. I have meant to do it for years but never got to it. I am thankful that my friend thought about this and made me watch it. If you haven't, you should.
