The Substance
2024
A woman uses a substance to reclaim her youth and beauty, but at great cost.
Elisabeth Sparrow (Demi Moore) is an aging health guru who is on the way out of her career whether she likes it or not. So when she's offered a substance that will allow her to be the best version of herself *terms and conditions apply she accepts.
The Substance spawns her better version, the young, vivacious, sultry and sexy Sue (Margaret Qualley). Sue becomes an overnight sensation on sexy exercising program. The problem is, Sue can only exist for 7 days, then must allow Elisabeth to awake again. If they do NOT continue with the schedule of switching consciousness every 7 days, ELISABETH suffer the consequence of rapid aging.
At first I thought this movie was supposed to be some analogy about how society values youth above everything else. And how the patriarchy only tolerates women while they are young and beautiful. But then it seems like it takes some weird turn and just goes down some seriously WTF hole. It continues to snowball until the incredibly bizarre ending.
It kind of wasn't awful to watch with the glamorous scenes with Demi or Margaret in them. But then, later it was. Rather than beauty, it was all about ugliness. Nope, this movie isn't great at all.
