4WD vs AWD

My station wagon is fulltime 4wd. I always wondered what the difference was from my 4wd and the newer Subarus with AWD.

I have the answer.

4 Wheel Drive means that all 4 wheels are rolling at the same time. They are all drive wheels.

All Wheel Drive is a system that's similar to 2wd, but makes other wheels drive wheels as necessary for traction.

The only advantage I see from one over the other is that AWD is more fuel effecient. Other than that I think they'll both get the job done.
