I saw this movie in the theater. It was fun and I liked it. But when after I saw it I heard that they were gunning for a lower rating and cut out a bunch of violent scenes. The film seemed pretty violent to start with so I decided to hold off for the extended Director's Cut when it came out on DVD.
Good call.
The extended cut is about 13 extra minutes and also has an alternate ending.
If you saw the original you will notice right away that this DVD heads off in new directions of violence. Within the first five minutes you get to see Lancelot decapitate a guy in a way I've never seen before in any movie. The battles have a new level of viciousness and ferocity. At times I cringed. I think it did a lot to drive home the notion that ancient battles were chaotic and bloody.
The alternate ending, which is a funeral for the fallen knights (instead of the wedding of Gueneviere and Arthur in teh theatrical version) seemed incomplete and didn't really give a feeling of an ending. I'm glad they included it, but I'm more glad that wasn't the ending they chose.
Plus in teh alternate ending they show that Arthur ignored Lancelot's request earlier in the movie. Watch it and you'll know what I mean.
It was about the same price as the regular edition. This one is far better.
