I first met Jonathan in ninth grade. We were both in the same accelerated education program. I had gotten there on the sweat of my own work, he had gotten there because his teacher parents pulled some strings to get him into these programs.
So many years down the line we end up at the same college. And as usual, when you are in the college scene you tend to remain friends with those you new in old schools. Maybe even better friends. Jonathan seemed like an okay guy, but he had a habit of talking your ear off with nonsense you couldn't care less about. If you should somehow offend him in any way, you can count on being ignored for a good long while until he required your assistance for something.
I remember my second registration at Queens College. It was in December for the spring semester of 1990. I had taken a serious earful of mind numbing jabber earlier from Jonathan and I was feeling very weary. So I was getting ready to call it a night and leave the gym, where they used to have registration, when I spied Jonathan along my path.
My face flushed as I tried to figure some way to avoid Jonathan. I looked around quickly. Isn't that Melissa from English class? Hmm. I can strike up a conversation with her and sneak past Jonathan that way. I won't have to stop and listen to him if I'm in the company of this lovely, smart, tall brunette.
"Melissa? HI!" and from there I was able to get past Jonathan and start a short lived relationship with Melissa. I found it funny that I was so desperate not to speak to this creepy guy who was like a chatty brawd that I picked up a girl just to avoid him. Strange how life works.
Melissa ended up ditching me and wound up with another science fiction modeler. That man was the great Ed D. of the LI Sci Fi Modelers Club. Great dude. I still speak to him periodically.
