Long Island Car Accident Kills Good Samaritan

SHIRLEY, N.Y. -- Suffolk County police are investigating a car accident that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Good Samaritan and left another in critical condition.
The accident happened early Monday on the westbound Long Island Expressway, near Exit 68 in Shirley.
Police said the woman from Fresh Meadows, Maria Kaliakmanis, was struck and killed when she got out of her car to to help another driver who had been in an accident.
Her passenger, Gregory Voulgaris, a 22-year-old man from Astoria, was critically injured while he tried to help.

I just learned of this young woman's death and went Googling for any information I could find. There wasn't much, and what I did find, I kind of wish I didn't know. She was a good friend of mine when we were young.
Such a shame, isn't it?
Accidental death is always terrible, but it's especially tragic when the deceased is so young.
