One month from now I will likely be short by two of my pet turtles. Tiny, a male, and Stripe, a female, are both Red Eared Sliders that my wife and I picked out some 7+ years ago on Main Street, Flushing. They were the size of quarters in a bucket of other RES in an Asian fish market. It was sad and shocking to find them in there so we did what we could and bought four to bring home, care for, and love. Two others from that batch we brought home that day were Tyrannus and Dot.
Dot and Stripe were the sisters that Stacey kept at her home. They joined her older RES, Roxy. Tiny and Tyrannus joined Snappy at my home. As the little guys grew, distinct personalities became apparent. Dot was always poorly behaved, nipping at the others in the tanks. But all mine got along delightfully.
That is, until they all "matured" and needed to establish dominance when we set up the 125 gallon tank in our new house. Personalities clashed. Dominance was up for grabs as these animals were trying to adapt to living together.
Stripe went on a warpath. She was shredding every other turtle in the tank. This was unusual as she was always shy and well behaved. My sister offered to take care of her and did so ever since.
Then Tiny went berserk. In an attempt to claim the tank as his own he began grabbing Ty and Snappy by the neck, trying to let them know who's boss. They didn't put up a fight. Too well behaved. After seeing the injuries getting progressively worse, my sister agreed to take Tiny too.
Unfortunately, despite my sister's best efforts those two would NEVER get along. She had to keep them in separate tanks. It's just overwhelming. So she couldn't keep them any longer. That was last month. I expect to be getting them back anytime now and shortly thereafter they will be heading to new homes. Stripe is going to a former hyperactive child who is now an animal lover. Tiny will be heading to my friend Rob's home. He's been asking about turtles since last year, so this way he gets one and I can still see my little guy... maybe.
So sad. Tiny was so cute. So gentle. So friendly. He enjoyed attention and even mimicked petting once. Never saw that before from a reptile. I'm going to really miss him knowing he's not in the family anymore.
