TALE OF THE BODY THIEF by Anne Rice

After the bad review I gave to The Queen of the Damned, you might wonder why I'd pick up another one of these vampire books by Anne Rice. Honestly, I'm not sure. I must be a glutton for punishment. But, most likely, I really want to see what Anne Rice does with the Vampire Lestat next.

So I read Part IV of the Vampire Chronicles, Tale of the Body Thief.

I've maintained while reading all of the other parts that these vampire books are much like gay romance novels. A lot of man-on-man love. None of that really bothers me, as long as there is a good story to go along with it. This book, had a very interesting concept. A man has the power to leave his body and seat into others. He's a thief in any way you can imagine. That's his reason for being: the excitement of the heist. So he goes to the most impetuous vampire, Lestat, and offers a trade - the thief will trade his mortal body with Lestat's for a certain number of days. Of course when you are dealing with a career criminal like this thief, named Raglam James, you know he will double cross anyone in a moment. And he did. Fairly predictable.

The interesting part was trying to figure out how Lestat would get his vampire body back from this thief. In doing so there's a whole side story of contempt, anger, flames, and as you would expect some man-on-man love between Lestat and his Talamasca friend David. The shocker is when Lestat actually has some activity with women. Didn't expect that at all!

The end is a bit of a shock. I won't even let on a single detail of it.

All in all, this was probably the best of the vampire chronicles so far. The characters finally seemed more real, rather than these godlike supernatural entities.

I call this one "good."
