I love a good sci-fi film. I expected to love this. Spielberg doing Wells' War of the Worlds had a lot of potential.
HAD a lot of potential.
Trying not to have the book or the original movie version from the 1950's in my mind, I wanted to see this with an open mind. I was warned by a lot of people about the drawbacks of this film, but I put them out of my mind.
First, Tom Cruise plays a grinning prick that you can't feel sorry for, or cheer for. The two kids are annoying. While there was a lot of the Martian Fighting Machines, it wasn't really stirring. The theory that the machines were buried in the Earth for millions of years and the aliens "rode lightning" to get to them was absolutely ridiculous, and ruined the movie right away.
Tom's character was also the only one who was able to figure all sorts of crap out. When all the cars died in the beginning, he knew how to fix it. He was the only one able to drive out of town. He knew how to hide from the invaders. He knew how to take care of things. He knew how to blow up the machines. He knew when the aliens were dying. Wow. Makes you wonder why he was a frikkin longshoreman in New Jersey and not a scientist?
I'd call this movie OK at best. It was very disappointing. It would've been better if they showed all of mankind's struggle with the aliens, as opposed to the personal struggle of one man who isn't even likeable.
Boo Spielberg! Read the book and learn to tell a better tale.
