Since the Middle Ages, English pubs have served beer and ale in quart and pint mugs. When the guests started to get a little rowdy, the publican often worried as much about the state of his crockery as the well being of the customers. When things seemed to be getting out of hand, the tavern owner would warn the clientele to "mind your pints and quarts," or "mind your p's and q's"
