The Producers is not a new show. It's been made into a movie twice, and has been on Broadway for years already. Probably the best press around it ever was when Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick starred in it.Well, they are no longer in the show, but the show goes on.
My wife worked her magic, yet again, and scored good seats at a bargain price. More on that in a moment. When you discuss an evening on the town you MUST take it from the top!
Stacey and I met the the corner of 46th and 8th, aka Restaurant Row. We don't bother looking around trying to decide what we want to eat. We go straight to Vita's because we KNOW the food is great and the service quick. This is the part of the review that I usually tell some sort of joke about my wife's college buddy by the same name as this restaurant. Something about her ample bosom, or her round buttocks, or some double entendre about performing any number of intimate acts on her, or all over her, but there shall be none of that today. LOLz. ;)
The Producers, at the St. James Theater, 246 West 44th Street, was less than 2 blocks from where we ate. We arrived at about 7:35 and the long lines of patrons had already filed in. Those bargain tickets that Stacey had scored were all the way in the back of the highest balcony level. These were the most reasonably priced tickets she's ever found for this sow, so we took what we could get. However, to our pleasant surprise, they had a huge block cancel out, and we were upgraded to the mezzanine for free. In fact, the upgraded seats were wonderful.
The St James Theater is a beautiful theater. But, then again, I haven't walked into one that looked like a mess yet. I guess when you charge that much for a ticket, it keeps the destructive riff raff away.
The show started at eight precisely. The music was perfect. There's nothing like a well practiced orchestra. The show kicks in. There's about two minutes of wait before "the funny" kicks in. Once the laughter starts, be prepared to continue for the rest of the show. Witty. Funny. Clever. You fall in love with all the characters right away and you are there for the haul. And the play within the play is a hoot! The cast was perfect, the songs were great, the choreography was flawless. No wonder this is such a hard ticket to acquire, the show is amazing!
If you like a good comedy, you'll LOVE this show. I highly recommend it
