In the theater: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

This was another one of those package deals that my wife scored. She got two tickets for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (worth $95 each) and $100 in dinner vouchers, for a restaurant that I'll discuss in a moment, for $70!!! That's some serious bang for your buck!

So Stacey and I met on Second Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets at a place cleverly named Ukrainian Restaurant. Despite the lack of imagination in naming it, the place is actually quite homey and comfortable feeling. The wait staff are quick and courteous. The food tastes like good old fashioned home cookin', or at like that from a Czech / Spanish household like I came from. I had the beef goulash which I adored, and my wife chose the chicken shish kebob. It was good too, but the Eastern European stuff is clearly the best choices on the menu. We ate very well, for a rather low price and were on our way in very little time. They get all aces from me!

We arrived at the The Circle in the Square Theatre, 1633 Broadway (between 50th & 51st Streets)shortly before 8:00. The entire shape of the theater as well as the stage were very unusual for this show. They made it look like a school gym. The show is an hour and three quarters. But from the moment it start time flies right by and you don't even feel it. Simply, it's the story of six children who get to the Putnam County spelling bee and how it impacted their lives forever. It's a knee slapping comedy. The cast is fantastic. It also seems that there is a bit of audience participation. It looked like they called on about 4 people from the crown to assist in the spelling bee. It's so clever that you're almost to afraid to laugh out your fullest guffaws because you might miss the next golden nugget. At about 9:45 we were departing the theater with giant smiles on our faces, thoroughly satisfied with this show. We'd, very much, highly recommend this for anyone who's willing to plunk down the bucks for this good time. Go for it!
