I was heading through the back streets this morning on my way to work when I noticed something white in the middle of my lane. As I got closer I could plainly see it was a bird. I took great care to navigate around the animal, but became concerned when I noticed it didn't move a muscle as I drove by.
I stopped and backed up. I turned on the hazard lights in hopes that I could block the street for a moment while I try to get the animal off the pavement. I dashed over to the bird. It is either a white pigeon or a dove. I could see the foot had a tag on it. The animal appeared to be sleeping! I picked the bird up and put him on the sidewalk away from harm's way, then drove off.
Wild birds generally won't allow you to pick them up. So I figure the animal was ill and not long to go in this world, however, I didn't want to think that it would depart under the crushing weight of a rubber tire attached to some car. My good deed of the day.
