We don't usually check out movies on opening night, but my wife has been dying for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ever since they said they'd be filming. I'm fine with that, the first one was entertaining and had a great cast. There's Johnny Depp for her and Keira Knightley for me. We're all winners! On to the movie. It opened to mediocre reviews. Most reviewers said it was okay, just very long. Indeed, it is quite long, spanning about 2 1/2 hours.
So here's the rundown: pretty much everyone you loved from the first movie is back for this second part. Once again it seems that everyone in the world is hunting down Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp), including a new villain Davy Jones played delightfully by the super-talented Bill Nighy. You almost can't recognize him under the effects, but his voice is the give away. In my opinion, Nighy is the shining star in this movie. His golden voice takes command of every scene he's in.
So you have two and a half hours of development. The movie is entertaining and keeps you drawn in. Then right when you almost scream for more, the movie ends in a huge cliffhanger. That's when you realize that the third installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, won't be ready until 2007!
So, I'd say this probably will be a big summer blockbuster and will be around for many weeks, still. However, I do suggest getting to the theater and checking it out before someone less scrupulous than myself spoils the film for you. You'll want to be shocked!
