On DVD: Spawn

McFarlane became huge during the early 1990's after leaving Marvel and started up Image Comics. Creations like Gen13, Wildcats, and Spawn quickly put him on the map. Riding the crest of the wave of popularity at the time, they went into production of a movie based on Spawn.

I only recently watched it, even though I meant to see it for years. Mainly I wanted to see John Leguizamo as the Clown / Violator. I think he's extremely talented and very underused by Hollywood in general. But his role was easily big enough that they could've considered the star of this movie.

Spawn has a good story, and it fairly entertaining to watch, but it's the victim of bad timing. When you watch it NOW, with all the advances in technology, it's a little hard to take. The computer graphics are unimpressive, and considering the role that have in this movie, it really ruins it. If this movie were to be touched up with modern technology, it would be great, but this film really doesn't have that sort of pull. There's no public outcry to get anything like that done.

Be that as it may, it's fine to watch. It's dark. It's rough around the edges. It's a different kind of superhero movie. If you are at all familiar with Spawn, or even saw a comic book cover of him, you might want to give this a spin and see what it was all about.
