Turtle Thursday: Roxy

Not too long ago I had a post looking for a new home for Roxy. After that, my wife felt badly for the little guy. So we've been trying to rehabilitate him ever since. We gave him a new basking area, gave him more water in the tank, and paid him more attention. He's definitely more friendly now. One of these days we'll try to reintroduce him to the general population of turtles and see how he does. For now, here's a little vid of me watching him watching me:

Turtle Fact of the Day: Turtle sex isn't in the genetic code when the egg is created. The temperature at which the egg is incubated determines the sex of the offspring. The temperature ranges vary from one breed to the next (for instance, red eared sliders require temperatures in the 70's while Painteds will incubate at even cooler temperatures) but in general, lower temperatures yield males, the high end produces females, and in the middle will come up a mixed bag.

Yes, my turtles have laid eggs. No, I have never tried to hatch them. I have my hands full with what I have, I can't imagine introducing new turtles to the mix annually!

Yeah, you definitely do Bob. I find one to be a handful at times, though a welcome one. From what I've gathered, turtle sex is pretty loud as well (ha ha). I'm glad I don't have to deal with that though I feel bad for my Gam, having nobody to "love" (ha ha). he seems fine though, as long as he's fed well. In the meantime, I'll have to check your vid at home (as it's not coming up here at work).
