On DVD: H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds (2005)

Boy was I duped. I was strolling around in video rental store when I saw this movie, "H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds." There were all sorts of rave reviews of the box. Such statements as, "true to Wells' original vision," and "scariest version ever," piqued my interest. I rented it.

I read the book about a year ago, maybe more, and thought the book was awesome. Some foresight of what modern warfare would become in a book written before the turn of the twentieth century. With the kudos issued for this DVD, well, I had to assume it would be monumental, or at very least, better than that tripe starring Tom Cruise last year.

I was so wrong. It really had little to do with the original book at all other than the fact that it was called War of the Worlds and aliens attack the Earth, and our germs end up killing them. In between, you have nothing but nonsense, bad acting, and gore. Indeed, this was nothing more than a cheesy B movie (B is being very generous) soiling the name of possibly the greatest written work in science fiction.

The only thing worthwhile was the opening scene showing the sloppy doctor's way too hot wife getting out the shower. The rest was unwatchable. Pass on this crap. Read the book. You'll thank me.
