This is an actual invoice for services from my office sent to a client:
For professional services rendered in connection with the preparation of 2006 individual tax returns: $300.00
Invoice includes all discussions during the year which you DID NOT listen to anyway.
So you understand how unbelievably stupid this client is, I'll tell a little back story. A client came into the office very excited one day. He got an email from an official in an African nation who needed his assistance, and in return would receive a million dollars for his efforts. He wanted to know about the tax consequences of such a deal. My boss flipped out. "You can't go through with this!" Marty implored, "You're going to lose your money! This is spam and phishing! Forget it!"
The client stormed out in a huff. He didn't like being told he was making a mistake, especially when the dollar amounts were SO attractive. He fell for the scam and took the loss.
He came in the other day trying to figure out if there was some sort of a tax benefit for his poor decision. There are breaks for casualty and theft losses, but wouldn't it have been better to listen to the accountant in the first place and avoid this mess?
