In the cinema: Spider-man 3

It's been over a month since it came out. It's fallen out of the top five highest movies of teh week. Sounds like a good time to go see the ol' web head.

After having read the book over the vacation I walked into the theater with a feeling a smugness that there can't be anything that the movie can't surprise me with.
I was SO wrong!
The book and the movie have very little in common. It's almost as if the book was written on a very preliminary script. It's far more vicious than the movie. But I've discussed the book already, so this review is all about the movie.
When I first heard that Spider-man 3 would include three villains I became giddy. Early word was Venom was certain. Pics of a sexy white haired emerged. Black Cat? Cool! Well, I was wrong on that one. The other villains turned out to be the Sand-man and the Goblin.
I will cut to the chase. I really liked the movie. It wasn't bogged down with too many villains, as they all served their own purposes and none suffered on the screen due to their numbers. The story was well developed and well executed. It was fun. It made you cringe. It made you rage. It made you sad. It made you happy you ignored the reviews and went out to see it.
Further evidence that the movie was good: MY WIFE LIKED IT! Stacey generally detests movies based on comic book characters, but she likes the Spider-man movies, including this one.
Now I would like to address some "concerns" I've read in other reviews.
Sand-man killed Uncle Ben. There was a ton of outcry about that. Get over it. It's the world of movies and comics, nothing is ever written in stone, EVER. Quit whining. Plus the Sand-man effects were awesome, especially the Sand-man juggernaut in the final battle sequence. Well done!
Venom is a stupid villain. I've read reviews where people just hated every aspect of that one bad guy. I don't care what anyone says, that 70's kid did a great job as Spidey's nemesis in the black suit. I know I winced when I first heard that choice of casting, but he did SO well. If you were a fan of the comic book, you would know that Peter Parker brought the black suit back from the Secret Wars (a comic book line during the 1980's). It was a gift from the Beyonder. It was a living costume that can shift shape. Peter could appear to be wearing street clothes one moment and the creature can morph into the crime-fighting tights the next. It took the assistance of the Fantastic Four to separate Peter and the black costume in the comic. A couple years ago when there was a Spider-man cartoon on TV they introduced the idea that Venom snuck into the atmosphere on a space shuttle, and the next logical step was the meteorite. Like the malevolent blob, Venom emerged from the space rock to inflict harm. I was always a fan of Venom, and always will remain so. He was done SO WELL in the movie, I was sad to see this great enemy go.
Gwen Stacey had a bit part. Suck it up. Gwen wasn't pivotal in the comic, certainly she didn't need to be in the movie. In fact, Bryce Dallas Howard is so good looking that I think they should've cast her as Mary Jane from the start, as she is a natural red-head and easier on the eyes than Kirsten Dunst.
Spider-man doesn't cry. That's right. That's why it was PETER who cried. Peter who cried over very important and justified means. I think it would've been worse if he DIDN'T cry. What? With super powers comes no human emotion? I don't think so.
And with those issues addressed, I would like to state my conclusion. This was a very fun and watchable movie even if you are not a comic book geek. I walked in, had fun, walked out. Aren't movies supposed to entertain? If so, then this one does the job well!
