I finally got around to see THE DEPARTED. Everyone says it's great, and it got all these awards and shit, so it's gotta be good. You don't even need to formulate your own opinion, now do you?
So I have to say, I was floored by the cast. Most of the biggest names in Hollywood today were all a part of this thing. Jack Nicholson as the Irish crime boss over Boston who acted as he usually does, and I do mean as he usually does. Jack really knows one character, a foul maniac. I really have to wonder if he's actually acting at all. Then you have your TWO heart throbs, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio, both of whom drawled in the worst Boston accents I have ever heard. Throw in Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, and "Markie" Mark Wahlberg as the guys further up on the totem pole in the PD, and you have the important cast. Honestly, I liked Markie Mark best of all in the cast. His ruthless douche-bagginess made him a load of fun to watch. Martin Sheen was all business, as was Alec Baldwin, and were both great as well. But the majority of the screen time was divided amongst Matt and Leo. We're talking over two hours of these two and their crappy Boston accents.
But I can assure you, you will be paid off with interest in the end. In fact the movie has about ten endings. But you be dumbfounded when the final ending occurs.
In my opinion, if you like mob movies, you'll like this, but if you don't or have no patience, this will wear thin on your nerves quickly. You really have to hang in there for a good couple hours before the pay-off of your investment of time. I know I was all set to head off to sleep just before the end. I'm glad I hung in there.
