Sam is a jerk

A couple weeks ago the boss and his son both came into the office frantic, "If the server crashes, will the backup work?"
"Of course," I responded with a furrowed brow. "Why not?"
"Well, we need to test it out. Take the most recent backup tape and restore it so we can see if it works or not," said the boss.
"Are you sure about that?" I queried. "It's a long process, and if we do something wrong we'll wreck everything!"
"Then we can restore the backup onto one of the workstations, not the server," was the response.
"That's still going to take a long time," I answered. "We were forced to restore a couple backups years ago and it takes about three to four hours. We have even more data now. Who knows how long it would take."
"Well, on a day when we're not here, you restore a backup and see if it works. This is VERY important," I was told.
Whatever. I went back to work. I spoke to my coworker if he knew what brought this sudden concern. We have two completely independent backup systems. We're prepared for the worst. My coworker said, "Oh, Marty spoke to Sam, and Sam put the scare in him. He said that sometimes backups don't actually work."
That was weeks ago. The boss and the son are still charging around the office determined to waste a day by taking the server offline to test out the backup system because this smelly old bastard Sam put this stupid thought into their heads. Stupid old jerk.
