On Film: 30 Days of Night

We actually saw this a while back. By now it's probably getting ready for DVD. At any rate, the wife and I went to the movies and the only film that fit in our agenda for the evening was 30 Days of Night. My wife knew nothing of this film, as you may not, so here's the skinny:

30 Days of night is based on a graphic novel, which is a fancy way of saying a thicker and more expensive comic book. The concept: ancient vampires sack an Alaskan town right when the sun goes down for 30 days. With 30 days of night the vampires have a perfect opportunity to feed without worry of the coming sunrise.

This was a pretty innovative concept in the vampire world. The vampires were cruel villains in this story, not just drinkers of blood, but blood thirsty butchers of all that is living. The movie is terrifying and gory. My wife had trouble sleeping after seeing this deranged movie. I was happy that they didn't make the vampire concept hokey and / or goofy. The brutal marauding pack only did one thing typical of villains, they loved to laugh as they stalked their prey, "once again proving that evil is funny as a motherfucker.*"

I was left with some questions after the movie. Where did the vampires come from? They alluded to being around for hundreds of years, but where have they been chilling in the meantime that they weren't attracting attention? What did they do with all the victims in the town? They all just vanished. Where were they headed? The sun was coming up at the end of the movie, did they have a car waiting for them on the outskirts of the town?

I think that if at least some of these questions were answered, I would've like the movie even more. But as it was, it was a very entertaining horror flick with high production value. Check it out!

* Quote from TSG, but written about Senator Palpatine, but applies perfectly in this case as well!
