In the cinema: AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem

requiem, noun

  1. a song or hymn of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person [syn: dirge]
  2. a musical setting for a Mass celebrating the dead
  3. a Mass celebrated for the dead

I don't think that anyone will argue that AVP wasn't a let down. It was okay, but people just expected way too much from it. That usually dooms a movie to break some hearts. So many expectations and only so much time on the screen and only one vision. Well, AVPR was supposed to make right the things that went wrong in AVP. The first and most important correction: an R rating!

Indeed, this movie demanded an R rating. It was vicious and brutal within the first five minutes and kept up for the rest of the flick, which was only an hour and a half.

So here's the skinny, this movie picks up from the moment AVP ended. The chestburster erupts from the corpse of the Predator. From there mayhem ensues. The ship crashes back to Earth in Colorado and the crew is dead. A solitary Predator heads back to clean up the mess.

From there the Aliens run amok and start wiping out a town. The locals are trying to escape with their lives, the Predator is trying to kills the Aliens and destroy all evidence. There's a lot of violence and gore all the way through. This was a far more frightening film, largely because it looks like it's taking place in your own neighborhood. It's scary in space, or a jungle, but in regular town, USA? A very scary concept.

Sure, there were several points that made no sense. How come the US Military didn't pick up two UFOs crashing in Colorado? Why did the Pred come to Earth only lightly armed? Is this Dallas guy supposed to be Dallas from the first Alien movie? Who was the woman at the end of the movie who collected the Pred gun?

That aside, I thought it was fun and worth watching. Some cool new tricks from these beasts. I can't wait for the DVD, as I hope there will be tons of deleted scenes in there!
