What part of the whale was the source of the whalebone once used for umbrella ribs, corsets, buggy whips, and brushes?
- The mouth of the baleen (or toothless) whale. The whalebone, or baleen, is keratin (think hair, fingernails, and hooves) that hangs down from the upper jaw of the whale in two parallel rows. The whale uses it to filter its food out of water it takes into its mouth.
- British potter Josiah Spode, in 1794.
