Spotlight: Most literary critics agree that William Shakespeare was the greatest playwright in the English language. Playwright Ben Jonson said of him, "Shakespeare was not of an age, but for all time." And, indeed, his work — produced during the Elizabethan era — is as popular and vibrant 400 years later. The "Bard of Avon" was equally successful writing poetry and plays, comedy and tragedy. He published over 150 sonnets and dozens of plays, among them Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet and Macbeth. Shakespeare is believed to have been born on April 23, 1564, and died exactly 52 years later, on April 23, 1616.
Quote: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." — William Shakespeare, As You Like It
