In the cinema: Star Trek (2009)

I am not a fan of the Star Trek franchise. I am not a Trekkie. I usually strike that up to when you were born. I was born in 1971, Star Trek was running in reruns for most of my life. Somehow I never caught the excitement of it that my folks had. If Trek was on, they were watching it. No, for me it wasn't Star Trek, but Star WARS. By 1977 I had matured enough to actually understand what was going on in Star Wars and it opened up my imagination and pretty much shaped the way I would turn out in life.

During the 80's Star Trek made a come-back. New movies with the original cast were being made. I still had little, to no, interest at all. Over the coming decades there were to be four new Star Trek series, and nine movies. The only one I really liked was The Wrath of Kahn which was a serious kick-ass movie and the only one I saw in the theater was the one that the cast of The Next Generation battle the borg for the planet Earth. Since I can't even remember the name of that one, you can tell I wasn't too crazy about it either.

So when I heard that J.J. Abrams was going to "reboot" the franchise I had low expectations. Who needs another boring Star Trek movie? But as time passed and more was being released about the movie, the better it looked. Finally it opened a couple weeks ago to stellar reviews (no pun intended) and the #1 spot at the box office. I wanted to see this movie VERY badly. My wife was desperate NOT to see it. But her friend wanted to see it and asked if we'd join her, Mrs. Bax0jayz was out-voted.

All the reviews were right. This is a Star Trek movie anyone can watch. I'm not a fan, but I LOVED it! The cast is great. The special effects are top notch. Awesome story. Everything about ti perfect, especially Simon Pegg as Scotty!

But I digress. This is a prequel to the original series. You get to see the events that brought everyone together on the Enterprise and how Kirk ascended to the seat of Captain of the Enterprise.

It's a really fun flick, and moves very quickly. It didn't even feel like 2+ hours. IF you ever liked Trek, or were even on the fence, you should really give this a shot. If you hated Trek you might still like this because it's so much better than anything that has been out there before. I highly recommend this movie!
