When I posted this release for Burning Skies by David J. Williams, I wanted to read this book badly. I got a copy and read it over my vacation in Jamaica.
This is book two in a trilogy. I think that may have had an impact on my opinion of this book because I didn't know about the first part previously. This book is supposed to be written so that anyone could pick it up and enjoy. I disagree. I felt lost from the beginning. The narration and all character voices are the same, so you detect no differences among them. Descriptions were far and few unless it was a description of someone being a bastard. This created a huge challenge when trying to follow the battles in the book. There's no sense of proportion. The layers of conspiracies and side-stories become burdensome quickly.
When you think the book is done, there's another 100+ pages of convoluted story. By the time I got to the cliffhanging end, I had absolutely NO INTEREST in where the story would go in book three.
For me, this book was a tedious task to get through. The writing seemed amateurish, and that the author felt that copious use of the words fuck or shit will make up for the lack of compelling characters and plot. I love sci-fi, this book did not live up to the hype. Pass on this.
