On DVD: Serenity

From the man who brought us legendary television like Buffy the vampire Slayer and Angel, Joss Whedon brought us the movie Serenity.

Serenity was a film adaptation and conclusion to a series that Whedon brought to Fox television called Firefly. I never saw that show because the commercials looked like a cross between the Wild West and science fiction, which didn't look like a good combination to me.

For years friends recommended the show to me, I declined. I was asked to see Serenity in the theaters and I passed. Finally a friend took the DVD and placed it in my hand and would not take NO for an answer. He also encouraged me by saying that one of the stars is Summer Glau, the girl who played Cameron in the recently canceled series, The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

So with no expectations I watched the movie. Since I didn't watch the show, I knew none of the background. The movie was well written so that my ignorance of the series wasn't a disadvantage. There was a lot of action. The good guys are very likable. The villains are very hateful. The story moves along nicely. Good special effects.

It was just an all around fun movie. So if you're trying to decide on something sci-fi to see, this is a good flick to try. And Summer Glau looks pretty good in it too!
