Plutonium

From my email:

Plutonium is a rare transuranic radioactive element. It is a radiological poison that accumulates in bone marrow, although its overall toxicity is sometimes overstated. The most important isotope of plutonium is plutonium-239, which is fissile, meaning Pu-239 atoms inside a critical mass of the isotope can break apart relatively easily and release a great deal of energy and more neutrons to sustain a nuclear chain reaction. This property makes it useful in nuclear weapons and in some nuclear reactors. The discovery of plutonium by a team led by Glenn T. Seaborg in 1940 became a classified part of the Manhattan Project to build an atomic bomb during World War II. The first nuclear test, "Trinity" (July 1945) and the atomic bomb used to destroy Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945, "Fat Man", both had cores of Pu-239. Disposal of plutonium waste from nuclear power plants and dismantled nuclear weapons built during the Cold War is a major concern. Most plutonium in the environment is from the fallout from above-ground nuclear tests and from several nuclear accidents.

Introducing Steve Rushton

Meet Steve Rushton - an energetic, pop-punker from England who is ready to unleash his music on the world. The twenty-one year old moved to Los Angeles last year to work on his debut album and has recently spent time in the studio with producer John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato). The album will be available this summer on Hollywood Records.

Steve may be a recent LA transplant, but he is no stranger to the Disney Channel family. He has two songs on the Hannah Montana Soundtrack due out in April and even a cameo in the film. He also sings the theme song to The Suite Life on Deck, the follow up to the hit series The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

The new single, "Emergency," is featured in the upcoming Race to Witch Mountain film, and Radio Disney just gave the track an 80% "pick it" in the Music Mailbag. Listen to Steve's pop/punk stylings on "Emergency"

No Regrets from Dope

Hard-rock lifers, Dope are getting geared up to release their most explosive album yet, No Regrets. The record is packed with the kind of energized guitar anthems that the Chicago band is known for but taken to another level altogether. The first single from the album, "Addiction," features Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne) and is garnering praise on radio already.

Check out the video for "Addiction".

A Grand Theft Auto Moment

I was driving to work this morning and see a wrecked car sitting in the middle of the street up ahead. There were parts, plastic, glass, and other shrapnel from the small Acura scattered all over Tulip Avenue. What did he tangle with? An armored car! It looked like a scene from the game Grand Theft Auto!

Static-X Cult of Static with Limited Autographed Booklet

Static-X can't be stopped. On their sixth studio release, Cult of Static, the Los Angeles industrial metal quartet engages sensory destruction. Due out March 17th, Cult of Static is loaded with songs that explode on impact.

Following 2007's massively successful Cannibal, Cult of Static is a statement. Wayne describes the album best: "Our sound is always evolving. This record has a lot more depth to it. On Cannibal, I tried to simplify things more, and on this album, I didn't worry about that so much. I went back to layering the music and making it moodier. It's just as heavy as the last record is, but it's bigger. It's got very epic moments. There are extremely heavy parts, but this is also the kind of record you can chill out to with headphones on. For me, it was about having a balance between fast, driving songs and dreamy, electronic passages. You can completely escape with it."

Hasselhoff Wednesday: For NASA

If the Hoff was in charge of things there would be NO MORE $280 million fuck ups.

Today's Holiday

Whenever they cancel alternate side of the street parking in NYC I have to wonder what the holiday is. I forgot it's Ash Wednesday. I'm a bad Christian. Here's the rundown:

Ash Wednesday, in the Western Church, the first day of Lent, being the seventh Wednesday before Easter. On this day ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful to remind them of death, of the sorrow they should feel for their sins, and of the necessity of changing their lives. The practice, which dates from the early Middle Ages, is common among Roman Catholics, Anglicans and Episcopalians, and many Lutherans; it was also adopted by some Methodists and Presbyterians in the 1990s.

Great job NASA

I wish I can get paid to be a screw-up like the guys at NASA:

NASA satellite crashes minutes after launch
(CNN) -- A NASA satellite crashed back to Earth about three minutes after launch early Tuesday, officials said.

"We could not make orbit," NASA program manager John Brunschwyler said. "Initial indications are the vehicle did not have enough [force] to reach orbit and landed just short of Antarctica in the ocean."

"Certainly for the science community, it's a huge disappointment."

The satellite, which would have monitored greenhouse gases to study how they affect the Earth's climate, was launched on a Taurus XL rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 1:55 a.m. PT (4:55 a.m. ET).

But the payload fairing -- a clamshell-shaped structure that allows the satellite to travel through space -- failed to separate from the rocket, NASA officials said. See video of launch »

The weight of the fairing caused the rocket and the satellite to come crashing down to Earth about three minutes later.

Meshuggah

From my email:

Meshuggah is a Swedish five-piece experimental metal band formed in 1987. Meshuggah's line-up has primarily consisted of founding members vocalist Jens Kidman and guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, who joined in 1990, and rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, who joined in 1994. Having gone through a number of bassists, the spot has been held by Dick Lövgren since 2004. Meshuggah first attracted international attention with the 1995 release Destroy Erase Improve for its fusion of fast-tempo death metal, thrash metal and progressive metal. Since their 2002 album Nothing, Meshuggah uses eight-string guitars and downtuned, groovy riffs. Meshuggah has become known for its complex, innovative and precise songwriting and musicianship, and polyrhythmic song structures. It has been labeled as one of the ten most important hard and heavy bands by Rolling Stone and as the most important band in metal by Alternative Press. Meshuggah has found little mainstream success but is a significant act in extreme underground music. Nothing and the albums that followed all charted on the Billboard 200. In 2006, the band was nominated for a Swedish Grammy Award. Meshuggah's commercially most successful album, 2008's obZen, peaked at No. 59 and sold 11,400 copies in the first week and 50,000 copies six months after its release.

In Print: Thunderball by Ian Fleming

I read this one out of order, this book was #9 of the James Bond series written by Ian Fleming, and it was the fourth movie made. I read it after the most recent book "The Devil May Care" from 2008. I was a little angry with myself for not reading these in order, but I really wanted to see if I actually WOULD like these books. Sure enough, I did.

The story is about a British bomber armed with nukes goes missing on a practice mission. It's up to James Bond to find the nuclear warheads and keep SPECTRE from detonating them.

This was a fun story and easy to read. As a result I have decided to read all the Bond novels in order. So I will probably post another review of this book in the future when the references to previous adventures will be more meaningful to me.

Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras is the elaborate series of outdoor pageants and indoor tableau balls held annually during the winter social season in the United States, especially in New Orleans and Mobile. The carnival culminates on Fat or Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Rooted in European pre-Lenten revelries, the carnival tradition in the United States began in the colonial period and developed in tandem with racial policies and practices and survives as an extravagant spectacle of excess, decadence, and burlesque. The pageants, each sponsored by one of the many exclusive carnival organizations, are based upon themes drawn from mythology, history, or fiction and are often satiric of contemporary social issues.
