The Ides of July: YESSONGS

As this posts, I'll be on my way to see YES perform out on Long Island. I think I've seen them every time they came to NY in the last decade, but something is different for this tour. The singer Jon Anderson is sitting this tour out because he suffered a lung malady last year. As a result they did the Journey thing and hired an "understudy" to sing. This guy can hit all the notes that Jon Anderson and Trevor Horn were able to hit when they were at the helm of the YES machine. With that, the band has been performing songs that Jon refused to, specifically tracks from DRAMA, the only YES album that Jon wasn't the lead singer on. So, since the Ides of July end tonight I thought I would double up my list discussing what I hope I will and will NOT hear tonight at the show.

TOP FIVE SONGS I HOPE YES DOES NOT PERFORM TONIGHT
5. Anything recorded after Talk. Talk was the last great Yes album. It took the musical leadership and direction of Trevor Rabin to create the last real Yes album. Everything afterward were nice tries, but completely unrefined and, in my opinion, unfinished. They needed something to make them complete but instead they turned out sounding like a lot of Jon Anderson's solo work.
4. America. Yes covered the Simon & Garfunkel song during the 70s and have been playing it almost ever since. I don't like the original and don't like the cover much better.
3. Close to the Edge. The first epic YESsong. It's a cool song but too chaotic for a live performance and they've plated it enough times. They can skip this one.
2. Owner of a Lonely Heart. I love Steve Howe, but he doesn't get that fat sound that Trevor Rabin was able to get out of his strats. The song just sounds empty.
1. Roundabout Edited. Steve Howe has maintained for years that one of the greatest YESsongs ever is way too long. In recent years they've cut the song in half when they perform it, taking the punch out of this prog-rock classic.
TOP FIVE SONGS I HOPE YES PERFORMS TONIGHT
5. Parallels from Going for the One. Somehow, the most rockin' song on that album never sees the acclaim it's due. It kicks. It rocks. It NEEDS to get played on stage again!
4. Gates of Delirium or Sound Chaser from Relayer. Both are wild songs. I always had the feeling that Rick Wakeman refused to play anything from that album that YES made when he quit during the mid-1970s. A couple years ago when YES had some other guest keyboardist they DID play the Gates of Delirium. Rick's son is standing in this time around, so I wonder what other surprises we might see?
3. The Ritual from the album Tales from Topographic Oceans. One of four epic songs, but clearly the most rocking one. It's complete with a feeling fire and brimstone and a monster drum solo that the entire band participates in. It'll soak up 20 minutes of stage time, but will kick ass every second of it.
2. Machine Messiah from Drama. The first time I popped the record (yes, the vinyl record!) into the player I was SHOCKED with what I heard. The phased guitars were very uncharacteristic for Steve Howe and the hard opening to the song tricked my heavy metal friends into liking YES. Jon refused to perform any songs from Drama, so this will be the first chance since Trevor Horn was singing to hear this!
1. Southside of the Sky from Fragile. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest YESsongs EVER. Between the heavy metal picking through most of the song, the profound piano solo, driving drums and layers of vocals this is perfection in rock music. When people say that songs are timeless, this it what they really mean. It doesn't matter that this song came out about 35 years ago. It'll fit just as well in rotation with everything and anything on current rock radio stations.

Adelitas Way To Tour With Shinedown

Las Vegas rockers, Adelitas Way will hit the road with Shinedown this fall in support of their self-titled debut, which released July 14th on Virgin/EMI Music and debuted at #16 on Billboard's Top New Artist Chart. The tour will kick off in Richmond, VA on Friday, September 11 and will work its way across the Midwest and West coast then travel back ending in Orlando.

To mark the release of its self-titled debut, Adelitas Way recently celebrated at the Palms Casino Resort in its hometown of Las Vegas on the album's street date. A select number of fans who purchased their CD at ZIA Records along with local radio contest winners, gained entry to a private concert by Adelitas Way at The Lounge at the Palms Casino Resort and the after-party at Moon. Preceding their debut celebration, Adelitas Way appeared at WWE's Monday Night RAW in Orlando.

The album's kick off single, the power-rock anthem "Invincible," has already been tagged as WWE Superstars theme song, been used for spots promoting the 2009 season finale of the hit series "CSI: Miami" and is currently available on iTunes. Since then, the single been streamed nearly 200,000 times on Adelitas Way's MySpace page and is building national airplay as it climbs at both Active and Rock radio charts.

In support of the single, the band shot their video for "Invincible," which was directed by Dale Resteghini, (Fallout Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Alter Bridge). Adelitas Way wanted to create an epic video that would awaken the fight in anyone who is in need. The video focuses on everyday people who are faced with life challenging circumstances, while delivering an inspiring message of hope and perseverance. The video will appear on AOL's NoiseCreep.

Adelitas Way is fronted by singer Rick DeJesus, who grew up in a rough Philadelphia neighborhood that was ravaged by drugs and poverty. In 2005, he seized an opportunity to move to Las Vegas where he met up with lead guitarist Chris Iorio, guitarist Keith Wallen, drummer Trevor Stafford and bassist Derek Johnston. Soon the quintet was opening for artists like Chris Cornell, Hinder and Tantric, generating an impressive industry buzz that resulted in their signing with Virgin.

Produced by the Grammy-nominated Johnny K (Disturbed, Plain White T's, 3 Doors Down), the band's debut album is filled with hard, edgy modern rock anthems spotlighting the shredding blues style of teenage axe-slinger Iorio and the propulsive, grunge-like drums of Huntington Beach, CA native Stafford, a veteran of Ozzfest band Shuvel. N.Y. bassist Johnston and West Virginia guitarist Wallen bring a combination of indie, hardcore and classic rock influences to the band's distinctive sound.

Adelitas Way, whose name comes from an unplanned visit to a Tijuana brothel, is currently on tour with Saliva and will head out with Sick Puppies on August 13th. You can check out first single "Invincible" and other music from Adelitas Way on the group's MySpace page (

SUICIDE SILENCE live at Hot Topic headquarters...‏

Riverside, CA's Suicide Silence formed in 2002. A quintet, the band specializes in that 21st century metal phenomenon known as deathcore, and was signed to international mega metal label Century Media. The band managed to get things rolling quickly, save for a few lineup changes, and went from formation to deal in a mere two years. In the meantime, Suicide Silence issued one pre-deal EP -- the simply titled Suicide Silence -- which saw the light of day on indie labels At the Deep End and SOS Records. Their Century Media debut album, The Cleansing, was released in September of 2007, and was produced by John Travis. The album was a bit of a mover and shaker in the genre, breaking through to the Top 100 on the Billboard charts, and would become one of the label's biggest-ever sellers. Following the release of the album, the band toured steadily in the U.S. and Europe with Parkway Drive and Bury Your Dead. Members Mitch Lucker (vocals), Chris Garza (guitar), Mark Heylmun (guitar), Mike Bodkins (bass), and Alex Lopez (drums) had more reason to celebrate in 2008, as the band was added to the Mayhem metal festival, which hit stages that summer. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide

Hasselhoff Wednesday and an astronomy lesson

Spotlight: Easy come, easy go. On this date in 2005, astronomers announced the discovery of Eris, a heavenly body slightly larger than Pluto, and called it the 10th planet. The International Astronomical Union did a little further research and decided that both bodies were too small to be official planets, so Eris and Pluto were demoted to the official designation of dwarf planet. Along with its moon, Dysnomia, Eris is the most distant known object in orbit around the sun. The word "pluto" took on a new meaning with this move — it came to be defined as "to demote or devalue someone or something."
