The events of You Only Live Twice left Bond with his memory damaged and living on one of the Japanese isles. Reading the name Vladivostok brought back a memory, and Bond knew that if he went there, everything will be set straight. He was right, but in an awful way. He made it into the USSR, but was promptly captured and the Reds figured out who he really was quickly. They helped him recover his memory, and with a certain amount of brainwashing sent him back to England with the hopes that he would assassinate M. Luckily the service was ready for such an attack and Bond was "fixed" so that he could be sent back at the Commies with a vengeance. The job: to kill Scaramanga, the Man With The Golden Gun, a sharpshooter who works for Castro in the Caribbean.
The story is about the cat and mouse game between Scaramanga and Bond. Who's really hunting who? Plus recurring character Felix Leiter shows up to lend a hand and hook to help Bond get the job done.
As far as Bond novels goes, this one kept you on the edge of your seat because of how dangerous the assignment was, and how Bond was always within spitting distance from getting killed. Since Bond was able to keep his cool, he was able to pull everything off with a bang. Exciting! A really great 007 book!
