In 1981 there was a movie starring Harry Hamlin, as Perseus, called Clash of the Titans. It was hailed as an instant classic because of it's stellar cast and monster design by Ray Harryhausen. Truth is that it was okay at best, and very campy. So how long can an epic concept of Greek Gods and mankind at war go without a reboot? In March of 2010 we got our remade Clash of the Titans in 3D starring today's new favorite action movie star, Sam Worthington, in the Perseus role. Essentially this new version tried to keep as far away from the original as possible. They even, literally, discarded one of the gifts from the original movie, the annoying wise mechanical owl.
So, the story is essentially the same. A princess must be offered up as sacrifice to appease the Gods of Olympus or else the Kraken will be unleashed to destroy the city. Perseus, being the son of Zeus but born to a human mother, is the only person standing between salvation and certain destruction.
The rest of the movie is about the journey to save Princess Andromeda and the city of Argos.
The special effects were excellent, and the movie moved at a nice pace. I don't think the 3D effects were necessary for this film, but weren't distracting. There's nothing worse than a movie that tries to do too much with 3D that it makes the rest of the movie suffer. The good guys were all likable, and the villains were hateful. Well done! The movie weighs in at under 2 hours, but it goes by pretty quickly. There's a lot of story in only 106 minutes!
I would definitely call this a fun movie and worth watching. It's slipped out of the Top Five for a couple weeks now, so the number of theaters carrying it will be diminishing, but I think it will be just as fun to watch at home on DVD. But you SHOULD watch it!
