1. Can you give my readers a brief introduction to the band, for those who are unfamiliar with you. How did you form?
We met at a music school in Liverpool, co-founded by the great Paul McCartney! It was really a honor to go there and a fabulous place to be creative.
I met Marlow in my first song-writing class. I was actually late and everyone had teamed up with a partner for a song-writing task and there was Marlow left for me! It must have been destiny because we wrote a really cool song and have continued to do so ever since.
Our music is our life and it’s so important for us to be true to our art, which is probably why we write and produce all our music!
2. When did you first start writing music?
I feel that music has always been in my soul and from young age I remember singing and writing as I wandered in the beautiful nature of Norway’s west coast, where I grew up.
It was hard not to be inspired creatively by my surroundings. I had a few record deals as a teenager but it wasn’t until I got into LIPA that I really began developing my song-writing and artistry in the direction I dreamed of.
3. Who were your influences?
Other then being strongly inspired by nature’s beauty and our life experiences. We have both loved artists like Michael Jackson, Enya, Bjork, and The Beatles. Filmic inspiration has also played a big part in our sound and image. Between the two of us, we have seen hundreds of sci-fi, adventure and fantasy movies. Some of our favorites include Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, The Labyrinth, Edward Scissorhands and Harry Potter.
4. Did you ever take any formal music lessons?
Not too many! It’s definitely quite a natural thing for me, even in Liverpool it was more about what you did outside the classroom, I don’t think there is any substitute for that.
5. Did your environment while growing up have an impact on the kind of music you make today?
Yes, definitely! Aside from nature, I grew up with a myriad of folklore and tales which definitely influenced who I am.
The title track ‘Encounter’ is definitely quite special for us, because it represents both our journey and the discovery of The Green Children legend. It was the last song we finished, and it flowed very quickly. ‘Price Of Fame’ also holds a special place because it describes all the ups and downs we’ve had in this crazy thing called the music business! To be honest each of the songs is a bit like a baby, this is first collection that we’re truly happy with and proud of.
7. How did you come up with the name of the new album?
‘Encounter’ represents the world having it’s first glimpse at us, it’s a beginning with much more to come!
8. How do you feel about the impact of the internet on the music business?
It’s kind of a double edged sword. We certainly believe music should be paid for, it’s a beautiful art form that requires so much work, if good music is to continue, the artists need to get paid! Obviously there are cool benefits with social networking and getting out to people with small budgets, but I’m not sure it’s a big enough trade off for most artists.
9. What song is most exciting to play live? Original and/or cover, please!
It depends, sometimes an intimate song in the right atmosphere can be as exciting as a big song! There is song called Unwanted Garden that is not on the album which is always loads of fun. Hopefully it will make the next album.
10. Any words of wisdom for those with hopes of breaking into music?
To realize that it is a business, and a struggling one! If you really believe in what you have then shoot for the stars, but the love for music always has to come first. And, listen to yourself! Don’t let others influence you if you are going against what you stand for or are making music that isn’t what you intended.
11. What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Chocolate and candy! I’m a big kid when it comes to that.
12. If you could have a conversation with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Wow, what a tough question! Musically, Michael Jackson was such an inspiring hero of mine, so it would be amazing to pick his brains.
13. What has surprised you most in your career so far?
Connect with The Green ChildrenThe politics and craziness of the business!
