Review Tuesday: The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

One day I was taking down the trash from my office and saw on top of the stack of recyclables was The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. Lately I've had great interest in these classics of science fiction literature, so I took it with me.

This book is really a collection of short stories written from about 1948 - 1956. The common theme in the stories is that in a post World War Two world, with the Cold War in high gear, and the introduction of the Atom Bomb, mankind's future was bleak. So humans reached out to our nearest inhabitable neighbor, Mars, to colonize. The stories take place starting in the late 1990s and spans the years to 2026.

As you read this you might get the feeling you're reading a script for teh Twilight Zone. You wouldn't be too far off. Bradbury was a writer on that show and teh twists and ironies are all present on this book too.

Living in the year 2010, it's very interesting to see what one view of the future looked like during the 1940s and 50s. In the book, it was believed that around the turn of the century a devastating war would break out and ultimately destroy the planet. The goal was to get away from the planet BEFORE the war, and save your skin. From the various tales you can glean bits of info that a savage war raged for years and encompassed the entire planet. It wasn't some awesome atomic firefight one-shot-deal, but a long drawn out war that took years. The first victim was the entire continent of Australia, which blew up in a stock-pile accident. But in all, it appears that humans were quite succesful at wiping culture and technology off of the planet. Don't think the settlers on Mars got away with their lives. They went back when the first flash exploded.

Don't worry, my scant details don't give all too much away. In fact, Earth's fate is only one little aspect of the book. There are many characters and tales being described and that's the journey of the book. The wild ride of Earthilings invading Mars, destroying all life and trying to make it familiar instead of appreciating it for is.

There's a lot to this fairly quick read. It's very enjoyable and keeps you tuned in to see what happens next. Of course, through all the darkness, the book does end with the beginning of a new day. A must for a fan of classic science-fiction literature.

Kick-Ass soundtrack in-stores now / "Suit Up" scene posted

Kick-Ass: Music from the Motion Picture is now available everywhere! The KICK-ASS soundtrack album opens with “Make Me Wanna Die,” the first official commercial release by new Interscope recording group The Pretty Reckless. The band is fronted by singer-songwriter Taylor Momsen, who is also one of the stars of CW’s hugely popular TV series, Gossip Girl. The release of The Pretty Reckless debut album on Interscope is slated for June 22nd; two days later the group joins the 16th annual Vans Warped Tour 2010 for its two-month trek, running through August 15th.

In addition to The Pretty Reckless, the KICK-ASS sound track album features the brand new title track by multi-platinum selling artist MIKA, who goes head-to-head with producer of the moment RedOne (Lady Gaga/Little Boots). The album’s heady mix of tracks spans the ’70s to the ’00s, with songs from the New York Dolls, Sparks, the Dickies, Primal Scream, the Prodigy, the Little Ones, 2010 BRIT Award-winner Ellie Goulding, and Japan’s Zongamin.

KICK-ASS, presented by Lionsgate and MARV, stars Aaron Johnson (who played teenage John Lennon in 2009’s Nowhere Boy) as Dave Lizewski, aka Kick-Ass. The plot thickens when he encounters Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage as the mysterious vigilante Big Daddy. He is working with his 11-year old sword-wielding dynamo daughter Hit Girl (played by Chloë Grace Moretz of (500) Days Of Summer) to bring down the local drug baron Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong of Sherlock Holmes). As Kick-Ass inspires a subculture of copycats, a friendship is forged with another fledgling crimefighter, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse of Superbad).

Make sure to pick up a copy of the album via iTunes, or Amazon.

ObamaCare Quick Facts

From my email:

  • Causes 9 million people to lose the insurance they now have;
  • Increases the already bloated deficit by $260 billion over the next decade when all the components are included;
  • Adds $371 billion to the deficit by not including the Medicare physician fee schedule change, also known as the "Doc Fix" provision;
  • Raises taxes by $569 billion on small businesses and creates a new marriage penalty with new income and investment taxes;
  • Cuts Medicare by $523 billion;
  • Increases premiums by 10% for people without employer-based insurance;
  • Expands the power of the IRS to enforce a government mandate that requires Americans to purchase government-approved insurance; and
  • After all the spending is done and the bill is fully implemented, 23 million people will still be uninsured in 2019.
Not sure how accurate it is, but it's the first time I've seen anything about what's in the bill. This one is obviously showing the dark side of it.
