Last Christmas I got an unusual gift from my in-laws. A book?!?! A book, to me, is a very personal gift. You must know what the person likes in order for this to be a good gift. What they chose was EMPIRE by Orson Scott Card.
The book is about a conspiracy that would lead to a modern day American Revolution that could possibly end up with the US as an Empire. Fighting against it from the beginning is a decorated officer in the military of Serbian descent (that plays into the story, too) who was tricked into formulating a way to assassinate the President and his jeesh.
The book is a series of faced paced thrills and provocative concepts that actually make you think. It has a very sci-fi feel, but if you don't like that kinda stuff it's okay. It's more like back ground noise.
The characters are all very likable and you can identify with them, and see their different personalities. That's imperative for a well written story. Additionally, nothing seemed all that far-fetched, which made it believable. The book wasn't written at a very high level, so it was quick to get through it. In all, I'd call this a book worth reading, it'll have you thinking for certain. Looks like my in-laws did a good job choosing this as a gift.
