Review Tuesday: In the Cinema - PAUL

PaulLast Friday Mrs. Bax0jayz and I arrived at the theater trying to decide what movie to see: Paul or Red Riding Hood. I remembered that Red was directed by the same person behind Twilight, so I suggested PAUL. Plus it was rated R, so the wife would be pleased.

The movie is about a couple sci-fi nerds, Graeme and Clive (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of Shawn of the Dead fame) who visit Comic Con in CA then go for a road trip across the US to visit UFO hot-spots. Along their way they meet up with Paul (voiced by Seth Rogan), an alien on the run from the US Government, especially "The Big Guy."  The rest of the movie is about their adventures as the unlikely team makes their way to the spot where Paul will be picked up by some friends.

The movie has an identity problem. It's a feel good film at parts, it's a raunchy comedy in others, and a thriller in the remainder. The entertainment value is the cohesiveness that keeps it all together. The interaction of the characters, and the amazing special effects that make Paul look amazing, really keeps you tuned in. Plus, if you're a hardcore sci-fi geek, you'll love the numerous movie references which were heavy on Star Wars! Additionally, instead of cock and balls, like all comedies these days, this movie has an alien with three titties! AWESOME!

It'll be out of theaters by this weekend, likely, so it might be late to check it out. However, I am planning on getting it DVD. It's fun enough to watch again!
