Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise added a fourth installment this summer: On Stranger Tides.
When word of the existence of the Fountain of Youth gets out, it's a race between the Spanish and British (under the leadership of Captain Barbossa) fleets and Blackbeard to get there first.
The movie starts off tediously like all the previous Pirates movies. It isn't until about halfway through that the movie develops a life of it's own, starting with the introduction of the mermaids. From that point on, the movie starts to get much more interesting and draws you in.
I'd call this 4th Pirates movie mediocre. Jack Sparrow is his usual mercenary self. Barbossa actually comes off as a likable anti-hero this time around. The movie ends with a wide opening for at least one more movie. Whether or not that gets done, who knows.
I'd call this entertaining, but not very inspired. IF they don't learn a new formula, they should let this be the final instalment in this Pirates films. We don't need another cookie cutter franchise. The fans will revolt.
