Appertain stems from the Old French word apertenir which meant "to belong." The prefix ap- is a variation of the prefix ad- which means "toward."

What roles did Spot the Wonder Dog and Aroma the Skunk play early in the TV careers of movie critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert?
  • They were movie-rating gimmicks the two used before introducing their thumbs-up/thumbs-down reviews in 1986. Spot the Wonder Dog came first, barking to indicate films judged Dog of the Week. He was replaced by Aroma the Skunk, who appeared during reviews of movies judged Stinker of the Week.
