Weekend Box Office: 03/12/2012

Box Office
1. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax $39.1M
2. John Carter $30.6M
3. Project X $11.6M
4. Silent House $7.01M
5. Act of Valor $7M
Oh so disappointing. The Lorax was able to fend off JOHN CARTER to hold on to the #1 spot for a second week. So allow me to discuss why this is disappointing. JOHN CARTER was a fairly accurate on-screen adaptation of the book, A PRINCESS OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The problem was not with the movie, but with REVIEWERS. The movie was universally panned as unoriginal and derivative. However, everything has been seen before because this story, written 100 years ago influenced the entire science fiction genre. I actually went to see it a SECOND TIME this weekend because I liked it so much. But the second place spot with a touch over $30 mill places it as, well, "disappointing" and likely a box office bust as it cost $250  mill to make. See it while you can. It's worth it. And it looks like this franchise won't make it past episode one. A shame.
