Review Tuesday: WARLORD OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs

This is the third book in the "Barsoom Series" by Edgar Rice Burroughs. WARLORD OF MARS picks up shortly after the events of THE GODS OF MARS.

The tale started with John Carter trying to figure a way to rescue his wife Deja Thoris, Princess of Helium, from the prison that the Goddess pretender Issus locked her in with Thuvia, Princess of Ptarth, and Phaidor, daughter of Matai Shang Hekkador of the Holy Therns. When Carter last saw his bride before being enclosed in a timed prison cell, Phaidor had attempted to kill her so she may have John Carter. Every woman on Barsoom is drawn to Carter, even though he admits to be poor with the ladies.

While pondering the situation, Carter spies Thurid, Dator of the First Born sneaking off. Thus starts the adventure. Thurid teamed up with Matai Shang in a plot to release the women from their prison to free Phaidor, and enslave the two red skinned princesses. What followed afterward was an adventure bringing our hero and villains from one end of Mars to the other.

During his travels Carter comes across the usual assortment of strange beasts and villains, as well as new allies. Also, most notable about this book, yet another race of Martians are introduced with skin as yellow as a lemon. They are a race of bearded warriors who live in the north ice cap and have been capturing and enslaving all who venture into their domain.

The book is a wild ride of twists and turns until the ending. There are several waves of huge surprises at the end which leave you with a thoroughly satisfied feeling.

Technically, there are many more Mars books in the series, but this is the end for the adventures of John Carter and his love, Deja Thoris. A lot of fun to read, I highly recommend that any fan of science fiction should read the John carter books. When you realize how far ahead of his time that Ned Burroughs was, you have to give credit to his imagination and genius.

I read mine copy in KINDLE FIRE format.
